Google Is Bringing Ads to AI Mode. The UK Is Next.

Dot Media graphic reading: Google is bringing ads to AI Mode. The UK is next.

Google has confirmed that ads in AI Mode are heading to the UK. It has not said when, only that it is planned for the last three months of 2026. Here is what we know, what we do not, and what is worth checking in your Google Ads account now.

What Google announced

On 28 October 2026, Google said ads in AI Mode are now scaling in 10 countries, and that it plans to expand to more locations in Q4 2026, “including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom”. That wording comes from Google’s own announcement, written by Shashi Thakur, VP and GM of Google Search Ads. Search Engine Roundtable and 9to5Google both report the same plan.

Google also said it is launching “multiturn” ads in the US, which means ads can appear in follow-up questions within AI Mode. That is US only for now.

What Google has and has not shown us

Google says click-through rates are “already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode”. It gives no numbers, and the source is Google’s internal US data from 20 August to 3 September 2026. It also says AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, based on its US AI Mode Report from May 2026.

Both figures are Google’s own and both are US-based. We have no UK data on how AI Mode ads will perform, and we would be wary of anyone who claims to.

What this means for a UK business running Google Ads

You probably cannot opt out

Google’s help page on ads in AI-powered experiences says text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible for AI Overviews, and that you cannot opt out or target those placements directly. It also says Google Ads “currently doesn’t offer segmented reporting” for ads shown within AI Overviews. That page does not mention AI Mode specifically, and the UK is not on its list of eligible countries at the time of writing.

Trade coverage of the announcement, including ContentGrip and Unite.ai, says the same eligibility applies in AI Mode. Google’s announcement does not spell that out, so treat it as likely rather than confirmed for the UK.

Longer questions change what you match to

If AI Mode queries really are longer and more conversational, broad match and AI-led campaign types have more room to wander. That is our reading, not something Google has said. It is a good reason to look at your search terms report now, while the rollout is still a plan.

What we would do this month

We would keep it modest. These are the checks we would run:

  • Review negative keywords and brand exclusions, so you know what you do not want to show for.
  • Ask AI tools the questions your buyers ask and write down which businesses are named. Because reporting is combined, this gives you a baseline for later. Our recent post on AI shopping covers why being named in the answer matters.
  • Check that your conversions only count real enquiries and sales.
Checklist of five checks for UK advertisers before ads reach Google AI Mode: review negative keywords, check brand exclusions, note your organic baseline, tidy conversion tracking, and do not rebuild campaigns yet.

What we would not do

We would not rebuild campaigns for a placement with no UK date and no UK results. Good targeting and clean tracking help whatever Google does next. If you are weighing paid against organic, our guide to the difference between organic SEO and paid search is still a fair starting point, though it was written before AI Mode existed.

Conclusion

Google has named the UK for Q4 2026 and nothing more specific. For now the sensible move is to tidy what you control: your negatives, your tracking and a note of how AI tools currently describe your business. We will update this if Google confirms a UK date.

FAQ

When will ads in AI Mode launch in the UK?

Google says it plans to expand to the UK in Q4 2026, but has not given a date. Q4 runs to 31 December 2026.

Do I need a new campaign to appear in AI Mode?

Google’s announcement does not say. Its help page says existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible for AI Overviews, and trade reports say the same for AI Mode. Check your account and Google’s help pages as the UK launch nears.

Can I opt out of ads in AI Mode?

Google’s help page says you cannot opt out of ads in AI Overviews or target them directly. It does not mention AI Mode, so we cannot confirm the position for AI Mode in the UK yet.

Will paying for ads get my business named in AI answers?

Google has not said that it will. Ads are labelled “Sponsored” and sit alongside the response. We have no evidence either way for the UK, so we would not assume paying changes what the organic answer says.
