Rio 2016 Olympic Logo Launched 2

The Olympic Committee has just launched the identity for Rio de Janiero 2016 Games.
Designed by Tatil a Rio design agency who were amongst 150 agencies initially in the running for the work.
“The winning logo exemplifies four Olympic ‘pillars’: contagious energy; passion and transformation; I would like to congratulate the Rio team for its choice of design for the Rio 2016 emblem, which I find very innovative and creative,” said IOC president Jacques Rogge in a statement.
“It truly reflects Rio’s and Brazil’s vision for these Games, Brazilians’ passion for sport, and the coming together of different cultures around one project—the Olympic Games.”
Although a fairly safe design (compared to the London Olympics Logo) it does seem fitting and it communicates more than just the Olympic games. It seems to be slightly environmental in its approach with the use of green, blue and orange seemingly representing the earth, sun and sea.
It also includes three figures in a kind of flowing celebratory embrace that communicates the idea of competition and a coming together of people in a friendly inclusive way.
Overall I think it works well in a none risk-taking way, though I might question the choice of typeface for the ‘Rio 2016’ though it is fitting to the Rio / Brazilian cliché.
