These are FREE easy-to-use science debate kits for all teachers. Funded by the Wellcome Trust, one of the world’s largest medical charities, to encourage debate on science issues.
“The kits have everything you need to run a debate on a controversial topic.
They are set up to help students learn how to structure a debate, back up their opinions with facts and consider other points of view.
This project is the brainchild of the team who run I’m a Scientist, Get me out of Here!, the award-winning interactive event where school students talk to real scientists online.
Kits primarily designed for KS4, but successfully tested with ages 11-18.”
The debate kits contain a set of eight character cards, a lesson plan, background info on the topic all in little wallet.
“The activity is a role play where students (or groups of students) are given different character cards with a short background and position in the debate. They also have a fact, an issue and a question. Students read out the first part of the card initially, then discuss. After this there are three more ‘rounds’ where they read out their fact and their issue, then address their question to the other character of their choice. Further discussion happens at each round.”
